Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson
A review of the first of the Ernest Cunningham novels
I was hooked by the title and wasn't disappointed. Ernest Cunningham is the narrator who brings a refreshing humour and self-awareness to the story.
The story revolves around the Cunningham family reunion on a snowy mountain and, of course, murder. It cleverly introduces the various members of his family, along their individual killer backstories. But what makes this book stand out are the subtle and not so subtle nods to the golden age of detective fiction.
There's lots to appeal to fans of murder mystery and detective fiction. From anagrams and Agatha Christie references to a twisty plot and the 10 rules of detective fiction.
An excellent read and I'm looking forward to reading more by Benjamin Stevenson.
