The Dying Light by Ann Cleeves
Venn is back for another mystery in Devon.
A modern, fast-paced mystery from the first page.
The Dying Light is my favourite Venn story so far. The whole story was vivid, current and moved at a great pace.
As I’ve come to expect from Ann Cleeves, the characters were perfectly drawn and believable from the ambitious politician to tragic victims. Plus, there was significant character development with Venn’s team. If you’ve read the earlier stories in this series, it’s satisfying to see how their lives are unfolding.
The plot was intriguing, with enough clues and red herrings to keep you interested and engaged throughout the investigation. I was still guessing the ‘who’ and ‘why’ until the very end. But when the killer was revealed, it felt like such a natural conclusion (if murder ever can feel natural) to the story. The final revelations tied in perfectly to everything you’d learnt up until that point.
After reading The Dying Light, I hope there’ll be more adventures with Venn and his team. It’s a five-stars from me.
Thanks to PanMacmillian and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions are my own.
